The title recedes almost entirely from view, while fragments of the question beneath remain visible:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay…”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe whiteness, empty space and distance between the layers retain something of the novel's final landscape — silence, isolation and the vastness of the ice. Cut individually from different pages, the fragments are brought together to form a single, continuous horizon. Beneath them lie passages taken from the novel’s interludes: the recurring descriptions of the sea that move between the voices. \u003cspan class=\"contents\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat appears at first to be a single landscape is therefore assembled from many separate voices — individual consciousness momentarily becoming something collective.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbove the horizon sits an expanse of uninterrupted black.
