Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — Threshold

Threshold is drawn from the opening chapter of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — the moment when the ordinary world first gives way to something stranger.

Rather than illustrating the rabbit hole, the original hand-cut work treats the page itself as the threshold. A small rupture opens within the text, creating a physical space through which Alice appears to fall. The intervention is deliberately restrained: Wonderland begins not with a grand transformation, but with a single opening in an otherwise familiar world.

At the centre of the aperture, the inverted A echoes Alice’s descent while introducing another possibility: perhaps Wonderland is not simply somewhere Alice travels to, but something already contained within her. The fall merely allows it to surface.

Originally created for Edition IX of The Novel Print Archive, this A3 fine art edition places the work within an expanded black field, isolating the interrupted page and bringing it closer to the visual language of the wider Interrupted Page series.
