Description & Technique
Page 33 from Graham Greene's novel Brighton Rock.
This is a papercut study. I have used this as a way of visualising a planned full piece featuring a full Brighton map in A0 size (1189mm x 841mm).
This particular part of the Brighton map was chosen because it features Seven Dials (bottom right) and looked interesting as well as providing a challenge. There is a second edition in reverse, but I preferred this one.
I have used words from the page to create the Brighton Rock line:
It's like those sticks of rock
Bite all the way down
You'll still read Brighton
The papercut is hand stitched to the black background. This technique allows the artwork to be free from the background, providing life, depth and shadow.
