Catcher in the Rye Feel Something Beautiful

Feel Something Beautiful began as an experiment while developing Edition XIV of the Novel Print Archive. I wanted to explore what would happen if the printed text itself became the subject of the cut — words lifting, disappearing and eventually leaving the page altogether.

The experiment developed into a finished work in its own right.

Cut by hand from page 17 of The Catcher in the Rye, fragments of Holden Caulfield's conversation have been physically interrupted and displaced. Three words have escaped the page completely: feel / something / beautiful

The original page is mounted within a deep black field, allowing the displaced words to continue beyond the boundaries of the book.

This work subsequently became a proof of concept for Edition XIV of the Novel Print Archive.

The papercut is stitched by hand onto a black background so the paper sits slightly away from the surface, allowing light and shadow to move through the composition.

The work is presented in a hand-finished box frame with a 20 mm gap between artwork and glass, allowing sections of the cut page to lift from the surface and create subtle depth.

The artwork itself is complete and signed in the studio.
