Description & Technique
This papercut is composed from page five — the opening page — of JD Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, one of the novels that has stayed with me the longest.
Cut into the page is the image of a merry-go-round horse alongside the line:
"I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff..."
In the novel, Holden imagines himself standing in a field of rye, catching children before they fall — suspended between innocence and the uncertainty of adulthood.
The horse reflects this moment of transition.
The carousel moves endlessly in circles, echoing the cycles of childhood and the uneasy motion of growing up.
The papercut is hand cut and mounted onto a giclée printed black ground.
The work is finished in a deep box frame, allowing the cut page to lift subtly from the surface and cast shadow.
