Frankenstein — Arctic Silence

Arctic Silence began with the closing chapters of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein — the pursuit across the Arctic ice and the image of a solitary figure disappearing into an immense white landscape.

Rather than illustrating that landscape directly, the work returns to the opening of the novel.

Constructed from the title page and Milton epigraph, the original composition partially conceals the page beneath a torn veil of tracing paper. The title recedes almost entirely from view, while fragments of the question beneath remain visible:

“Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay…”

The whiteness, empty space and distance between the layers retain something of the novel's final landscape — silence, isolation and the vastness of the ice. A rupture runs vertically through the composition, while the word Lost, isolated from Paradise Lost, remains quietly visible within it.

Originally created for Edition XI of The Novel Print Archive, this A3 fine art edition places the work within an expanded black field, bringing the page closer to the visual language of the wider Interrupted Page series.
