"Open Your Mind"

This original papercut is composed from page 131 of I, Robot by Isaac Asimov, a collection of stories that explores the uneasy boundary between human and artificial intelligence.

The composition takes the form of a mind — part organic, part mechanical — suggesting the blurred territory between thought and circuitry that runs through Asimov’s writing. Branching structures spread across the page like neural pathways, while a central mechanical form hints at the presence of a constructed intelligence.

Beneath the composition appears a single reconstructed word formed from letters removed during the cutting process:

“nevermind.”

The phrase carries a deliberate ambiguity — at once suggesting the dismissal of thought, and the deeper question of what a mind truly is when intelligence can be both human and artificial.

The papercut is cut directly from the page of the novel and stitched by hand onto a black background so that sections of the paper sit slightly away from the surface. This allows light and shadow to move through the composition, giving the work depth and movement.

The piece is presented in a hand-finished box frame with a 20 mm space between the artwork and the glass, allowing elements of the papercut to rise from the surface and creating a quiet three-dimensional presence.

This work is the only hand-cut instance of the composition, made directly from a specific page of the text.

A small studio edition may be developed from this work at a later date, derived from the original and produced through a separate, fixed process.
