Jane Eyre — Same Fire
Same Fire explores the tension between confinement and independence at the heart of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
The original composition brings together two pages from different moments in the novel. One comes from Jane's childhood, when she is punished and confined to the red-room. The other comes from her declaration of independence as an adult — her refusal to be restrained or diminished by another.
Flames rise and intertwine across the text, suggesting both destruction and renewal — the same fierce spirit present in Jane as a child and as a woman.
Selected passages remain deliberately visible, including “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being.” These words form the emotional centre of the work, connecting Jane's early experiences of powerlessness with her eventual assertion of freedom.
The title Same Fire refers to the continuity of that spirit. Jane changes throughout the novel, but the fire within her remains.
Originally created for Edition XII of The Novel Print Archive — Volume I: The Wild Interior, this A3 fine art edition places the work within an expanded black field, allowing the flames to emerge from the darkness while emphasising the physical fragility of the original pages.
