Description & Technique
This papercut is composed from the opening pages of Piranesi, Susanna Clarke’s quiet and mysterious novel of the House.
The composition draws upon several of the book’s recurring elements — the tides moving through vast marble halls, the silent statues, and the distant moon that governs the rhythms of the sea. The image reflects the strange interior world of the House, where time is marked by water, light and repetition.
Cut directly from the first pages of the novel, fragments of the text remain within the image. From the discarded portions of the page, a line from the book is reconstructed:
“In my mind are all the Tides
Their Seasons
Their ebbs and their flows.”
Separated from the body of the text, the sentence becomes a small reflection on the novel’s great tidal cycles — memory, recurrence and the quiet movement of the sea through the chambers of the House.
Hand cut.
The papercut is stitched by hand onto a black background so the page sits slightly away from the surface, allowing light and shadow to pass through the cut paper.
The work is presented in a hand-finished box frame with a 20 mm gap between the artwork and the glass, allowing sections of the page to lift from the surface and create subtle depth.
This work is the only hand-cut instance of the composition, made directly from a specific page of the text.
A small studio edition may be developed from this work at a later date, derived from the original and produced through a separate, fixed process.
