The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells — Rising Out of the Earth

Rising Out of the Earth is drawn from H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds — a moment in which the Martian fighting machines tower over the landscape, reducing everything beneath them to insignificance.

The original hand-cut work depicts a towering Martian tripod emerging from the printed page. Its long, skeletal legs descend through the text towards a fragmented skyline, while small interruptions and displaced words suggest the destruction unfolding around it.

Rather than enlarging the original book page, the composition preserves its natural proportions within an expanded black field. The surrounding darkness exaggerates the scale of the machine, leaving the printed page exposed and vulnerable.

The words rising out of the remain visible at the foot of the composition, allowing the original text to become part of the image itself.

Created as a standalone original, this A3 fine art edition places the work within the wider visual language of the Interrupted Page series.
