The Waves — Fragile Horizon

Fragile Horizon is drawn from the shifting voices and rhythms of Virginia Woolf’s The Waves.

The original composition is constructed from fragments of the novel’s six voices — Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny and Louis. Cut individually from different pages, the fragments are brought together to form a single, continuous horizon. Beneath them lie passages taken from the novel’s interludes: the recurring descriptions of the sea that move between the voices.

What appears at first to be a single landscape is therefore assembled from many separate voices — individual consciousness momentarily becoming something collective.

Above the horizon sits an expanse of uninterrupted black. This absence represents Percival: the character who never speaks, yet whose presence profoundly shapes the lives of those around him.

The fragment “deep-blue save for a pattern of” remains deliberately incomplete — a line suspended between sea and absence, suggesting something glimpsed but never fully resolved.

Originally created for Edition X of The Novel Print Archive, this A3 fine art edition places the work within an expanded black field, emphasising the isolation of the page and bringing it closer to the visual language of the wider Interrupted Page series.
